The Good Councillor Guide to Employment
Publication revised, 2023 now available

The defining indicator of a good local council is how it looks after its people and when councils support their staff they are better able to deliver objectives and adapt to changing needs or priorities.  We know from the number of enquiries we receive that questions and problems linked to employment and HR matters feature in the top five issues. 

We believe all councils should have a copy of this guide as it offers comprehensive and straight forward information that will benefit the council and its employees taking into account legislation as well as good practice.   It is also included in our recommended reading list for new councillors or those updating their knowledge in our new councillor development pathway – use this link to view.

To access an electronic copy clerks should go to the member portal and visit The Model Council – Appendix E hosts e-books (watch this short video to assist).  Alternatively you can order a hard copy for your council using the order form below.  Please note that the cost per copy is dependent on the number of requests we receive as the printing costs for this new publication have increased.    Please budget for up to £8 per copy plus postage (this will be the price if we only get 50 requests) but should we get 100 requests the price will be around £5.00 per copy plus postage.
